What Is Karate? Karate can be described as a martial art, or fighting method, involving a variety of techniques, including blocks, strikes, evasions and throws. Shotokan karate is beneficial both physically and mentally and promotes health, wellbeing and confidence. It is a martial art in which you will be taught basic blocks, punches, kicks and stances, all with minimal or no contact. You will learn how to apply these techniques in attack, defence and counter attack situations known as kumite and you will also learn how to perform sequences of karate techniques and movements known as kata.
